**** For the touristy stuff
** For the historical and factual information.

This book may have been rushed to print in order to make the 2010 summer travel season. But if you're only 17 pages into the book and you come to "Poland was arguably hit harder by the Soviet regime than the other countries in this book" (What other countries?), you wonder how much more copy-and-paste errors you'll encounter. Dodgy copy editing and proofreading.

I just spent 4 days in Warsaw with this book as my main guide. Although the book is exhaustive, and takes you in directions that you might not think about and is therefore worthwhile, it woefully needs updating. Poland is a country which changes minute-to-minute, and this book, published in 2003, leads you down many restaurant and hotel roads which are dead ends. And when you need to get to the airport its maps are no help.

However, the format, the photos, and the walks are excellent.

I was lucky to find this book in the library and used it extensively while in Warsaw, Cracow and Prauge. The detail is incredible, the writing style excellent with a lilt of humor. This book -made- my trip so I'm buying my own copy. If you take this book to Europe with you don't bother hiring a guide or taking a tour. It has more than any individual could offer.

Travellers Warsaw, 2nd

Full of all the info you really want, great history sections (and maps that could use some improvement in readability), these guides are tremendous - including this Warsaw guide. Used it in July for 9 days in Warsaw and it never let us down. I supplemented with the free map available at our hotel, and it worked perfectly.

I always go back to Cook's guides -- and I've tried all the others, believe me! Only Michelins come close, in my opinion.

But do be aware: these finely produced books are a bit heavy!
